Your Baby in Week 23 of Pregnancy

Your little doll-sized babe is about to chub up a bit. His saggy skin will start to fit his frame as fat deposits fill things out. Beginning this week, he'll start to pack on the pounds (which means you will too!) and by month's end he'll be double the weight he is now (though you won't be — whew!). Right now, your baby's organs and bones are visible through his skin, which has a red hue due to developing veins and arteries beneath. But once those fat deposits settle in, he'll become less transparent.

During month five, the average fetus measures about 10.5 to 11.8 inches and weighs about 12.7 to 20.8 ounces, about the size of a small doll. But your little doll (who now has eyebrows, eyelashes, and maybe even some hair on that little head) is a living one who can now perceive light and dark. She can also hear your voice, your heartbeat, your gurgling stomach, and the whoosh-whoosh of blood circulating through your body. And as her brain and nerve endings develop, she may reach for her face (or whatever she can reach) just to experiment with her new-found sense of touch.

At 10.5 inches and about 12.2 ounces, she's big enough now that you've probably been feeling her movements. and speaking of bananas, if you eat one this week, there's a good chance your baby will get a taste, too. That's because he swallows a bit of amniotic fluid each day (for nutrition, hydration, and to practice digesting), so he eats whatever's on your menu — and gets to put those developing taste buds to good use. So go ahead and nosh on those nachos (or crunch those crudités): Your baby may develop a taste for them when he’s older.

Our first baby purchase!

Thankfully, I bought them in 1month size.  Elie is thoroughly convinced that no normal sized baby will fit into these.  Time to find a new born to visit, STAT!

Half baked!

To commemorate our half-baked-ness, we made our way to the doctor's office early this morning for our routine monthly check-up.  We got there, talked briefly with the doctor, and then went back for the exam: blood pressure, weight, measuring of the belly, and (our favorite) the ultrasound!
A quick briefing on the doctor:  He is a very good doctor and has a great record, but tends to be very "non-alarmist" as one of my friends says.  I prefer it that way.  I mean, all this stuff is stressful enough without having a doctor who is hyper vigilant.  However, when this man shows ANY kind of emotion it is a rare occasion.
So there he is doing the exam and he looks at me and goes "Your baby is bigger than average".  Then he gets out his measuring tape and starts measuring the size of the bump.  He stops, furrows his brow, sizes up Elie, sizes me up.  Ok, so the man is looking puzzled, so I can't figure out for the life of me what is going on or if I should be worried.  Then he stops turns to me and says "Well, it's definitely a...um... well developped baby".
In short, my bump is measuring 2 inches above my belly button.  It should be right at my belly button right now according to the gestation period.

But everything else appears to be perfect.  Elie was bummed that the ultrasound wasn't as detailled as usual and that SpaghettiO didn't move much.  The doc quickly sped over everything so that we couldn't tell the sex, but Elie felt cheated.  It's ok, he'll get to get up close and personal in 2 weeks when we go for the anatomy scan.  And NO! We are still not finding out the sex.  Bring on the ducks! (*cough* Mom *cough*)

Week 20

Your baby's the size of a cantaloupe!
Baby weighs about 10.2 ounces and measures about 6.5 inches. She's still got a lot of growing to do though.
Your second trimester ultrasound, scheduled for anytime between 22 and 26 weeks, gives your practitioner a chance to see how things are going in there. And, wow, are they going! If you're having a girl, her uterus is now fully formed and her ovaries are holding about seven million primitive eggs. If you're having a boy, his testicles have begun their descent from the abdomen to their ultimate destination — the scrotum. And while your baby is definitely getting bigger, there's still plenty of growing room in there, which allows him to twist and turn (and allows you to feel his acrobatics!).

Baby's the size of a mango!

At about 6.0 inches long and weighing in at about 8.5 ounces, s/he's getting there! Have you ever seen a mango dipped in cheese? Well, that's what your baby looks like this week due to a little growth spurt (she's about a half pound in weight and six inches long) and a substance called vernix caseosa. This greasy white stuff covers your baby's skin, protecting it from the surrounding amniotic fluid. (Without it, she'd look totally wrinkled as she entered the world.) The vernix sheds as delivery approaches, though some babies still sport a bit of the coating at birth.
